This seminar will describe the role of estrogen deficiency in increasing sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and its impact on metabolic health in postmenopausal women and explain how increased SNS activity impairs insulin action in liver and adipose tissue through dysregulation of lipolysis and glucose production. It will also discuss emerging evidence that insulin resistance can develop independently of impaired cellular insulin signaling and instead arises from neuro-autonomic dysregulation and the therapeutic potential of targeting sympathetic overactivity as a strategy to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic outcomes in menopause-associated metabolic disease
