Following a meal resident bacteria living our intestine metabolize macro- and micronutrients to generate unique small molecule, protein, and lipid metabolites that can systemically circulate at high levels. Gut microbe-derived nutrient metabolites can act very much like endocrine hormones where they engage host receptors to elicit meal-related physiologic responses in the host. This talk will cover emerging evidence that metaorganismal (i.e. microbe-host) endocrine pathways are associated with cardiometabolic disease and will discuss drug discovery strategies targeting the gut microbial endocrine organ.
